Egret Cottage

The Egret Cottage was built in the 40’s and was originally owned by the Moore Family from Middlefield, Ohio. Grandpa Moore owned the local Ford Dealership back in our Ohio neck of the woods and he built this home to enjoy warm weather and sunshine and escape the cold snowy Ohio winters! Rumor has it that he owned quite a bit of land in downtown Eustis and divided up the properties along the main drag through Eustis to as we know them today! Can you believe he sold the lots for $50? As time marched on, The Egret Cottage passed to his son and wife, Walt and Cathy Moore. I have fond memories of visiting the Moores with my parents as we passed through Eustis for our annual week-long trip to Florida! Picking oranges and grapefruit from the back yard was (and still is) lots of fun! It was during one of these trips visiting the Moores when Walt told my folks that his neighbor was getting on in years and wanted to sell her home! With a quick introduction…..she was a teacher….my Mom was a teacher…….my folks shook hands with the neighbor woman and purchased what we now call The Osprey Cottage (and The Osprey Cottage is another story!). I think this is a fun opportunity to share the connection of the Moore family to my family. My Dad, Dick, and Walt Moore grew up together in Ohio…… My Dad worked at their dealership and gas stations….. Both guys went to school together and both served in World War II. Now the fun begins as these two guys grow old together snowbirding back and forth from northeast Ohio to sunny Eustis Florida every year! The antics of these two guys – winter neighbors – are numerous and probably too colorful for public display. Let it suffice to say that back in those days with their garages facing one another and their winter projects always in process….. Walt’s garage was named Walt’s Warehouse and my Dads garage was named Dicks Tinker Shop! These names were perfect for these buddies! My parents ended up purchasing this home from their daughter and this cute cottage became mine as a gift from my Dad! So was I to continue to call it the Moore Home or Walt’s Warehouse or Walt’s Winter Wonderland? Mmmmm…. Cute little cottage in historic Eustis Florida on a cool piece of private property with a nature setting and lake in the back yard yet in the thick of things……. I think The Egret Cottage is quite fitting and more appropriate for public terminology but I will let you be the judge when you come for your visit!

This two bedroom, one bath home with detached yet indoor laundry is a great place to call home during your next visit to the area! Built of solid concrete block, it has stood the test of time. With every improvement such as new windows, new kitchen, new roof, plumbing and electrical, we’ve endeavored to keep its charm of an era gone by! The front enclosed sun room hosts an antique upright piano (please enjoy it!)and a futon for extra visitors as well as offering our guests a quiet spot to read while others watch TV in the adjoining living room.

While our property is located in downtown Eustis, we are fortunate to have a private compound of sorts! There is a lake situated in our backyard which offers respite from the hustle and bustle of city life and quite the array of wildlife and bird watching…… Such as Egrets! Ahhhh – the name of The Egret Cottage! We also own The Osprey Cottage next door to the north and we live in The Heron Cottage to the north of The Osprey! But all of that is a different story! Our Ross Cottages property offers guests an opportunity to experience the “real” Florida of nature and the wildlife but still have the convenience of a quaint and historic downtown! Our family and guests enjoy the porch swing in the evenings where one can enjoy a beverage while watching the various birds such as Eagles, Ospreys, Herons, Egrets come to feed or roost! Enjoy the large RV Pavilion with patio tables, gas grills – all overlooking the lake in the back! We even see alligators quite regularly! We will have to name our oversized (boat and RV friendly) driveway Alligator Alley!

The Egret Cottage is two blocks from Lake Eustis and its scenic boardwalk that is over the lake along the downtown Eustis Ferran Park border! Eustis has monthly street parties (first Friday of every month) and monthly car shows (last Saturday) which boasts bands and food vendors. There are other events that happen downtown throughout the year too. Restaurants and shops and the waterfront park/boardwalk and the street festivals make our location a great spot to walk or bike to/from downtown! If you want more hiking or swimming at some beautiful natural springs, we are located just south of the famous Ocala National Forest. If you want more theme park action like Disney or Universal, you can head south towards Orlando and find those attractions a pleasant 45 minute drive away! Then if you want some beautiful beach bumming, we are about an hour from each coast! If you love to boat like we do, you'll love the proximity to the Harris Chain of Lakes which Lake Eustis is one of the lakes on this chain and one of many boat ramps is a mile close!

Ross Cottages offer some jalopy bikes to bike around Eustis and we are happy to loan you some coolers or lawn chairs for your further adventures! Please come for a visit and enjoy our little slice of paradise! You will find our cottages very well maintained, extremely clean, and thoroughly stocked so that you can easily make yourselves at home! If there is something else or more that you'd like or need, chances are we can accommodate! Pack your suitcase and come for a long weekend, week, month or season! Please check out our photos and book with confidence.
